Help with marketing my art business?

I would like to do some illustrating, books, news papers etc.. If you have a marketing idea please answer

1. I tried to do such a thing in my country. The experience is: books are not illustrated anymore, newspapers have their own people to create an illustration, and it is not used often. I ended as freelancing graphic designer, I run a blog and that's it. http://culturexy.blogspot.com
2. If you're in the United States the Artist Market 2008 will be invaluable to you. Not only does it list pay rate, but also what's being sought and who to contact within the organizations. Remember that nothing ventured, nothing gained. I contacted a small local dog owner magazine by email asking if they'd be interested in a one page dog paper doll and they went to my site, contacted me back within a week and bought two designes for one time only printing rights, for $50 each. It was totally out of the blue but we were both happy with the results.
